Portraits in marquetry are tricky. Portraits of children doubly-so. Three in one picture - risky!
This started almost as a "challenge" from the client, but as the faces came together we both got more excited about how the picture would turn out.

On the Backhand
H: 280mm W: 190mm
The principal veneers used are maple & bleached anigre (clothing), American gum (skin tones) burr walnut (bowl and mat), ebony (tie & hat-band) and sapele (background)
This design was based on a photograph I took of our previous club coach. He has a beautiful bowling action with his weight balanced over his feet and his eyes directly above his bowl.

Naked Ambition
H: 345mm W: 185mm
A three-veneer picture in walnut, willow and olive ash.
Having drawn the design, loosely based on an image from a magazine advertisement, I searched for quite a while before finding the figured walnut that gave sufficient contrast and dynamism to the image. I was pleased with the torso, which is a single piece of veneer and the silky texture really represents the skin tones well. She really is "willowy"!

Monnow Bridge, MonmouthH: 273mm W: 350mm

Aisha
H: 340mm W: 200mm
A three veneer picture in sapele, aspen and pear.
This picture started out as a photograph of a beautiful student from Wolverhampton College who was modelling her own clothing designs at a show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. I simplified and abstracted the photo through the computer before undertaking the interpretation in marquetry.
